The Backbeat Soundsystem, DJ Jah Harmony-Bocabar/Red Brick
In a UK reggae scene that has long eschewed bands in favour of sound systems, Backbeat Soundsystem are a different beast, bringing eight musicians to the stage. While many of their peers are slavish in their attempt to recreate an authentic Jamaican-leaning sound, Backbeat Soundsystem are not afraid to go in totally different directions, pulling in influences from all across the music spectrum, to create their vision of modern reggae. Dean and Adjua effortlessly tear up the stage with lush harmonies, soaring melodies and natural born chemistry. This combined with a flawless horn section and undeniable groove leaves the audience mesmerised by their show stopping performance. Bringing an electronic flavour to the mix, with dub effects, sirens and live analog synthesiser, Backbeat Soundsystem remind the world that dub reggae is at the forefront of dance music culture.

Feature

Neville Staple and Flipron Gig for Mind on Saturday 20th January.
Recently I spoke to Neville Staple, Christine Staple, Joe Atkinson and Jesse about the upcoming gig that has just been announced for the Mind Charity in Glastonbury. We are really fortunate to have two acts in the ex-Special Neville Staple and his band plus Flipron playing in Glastonbury early next year.
Judging by the set that I saw the Neville Staple Band play in a sold out Bristol show we should see plenty of classic ska songs and many Specials favourites along with tracks off of their latest album The Return of Judge Roughneck. There will be plenty of shouts of Rude Boy and full on dancing as the band will create a full on party for all of those that attend.
Flipron last headlined Night at the Abbey in Glastonbury where they entertained with a greatest hits set and were thoroughly enjoyable in the rain. Just don’t press that red button.
