2230-2330            Laid Blak

Laid Blak have been at the heart of Bristol's urban reggae scene for over half a decade, drawing inspiration and energy from their home city, and using this to fuel the gigs and releases that have gained them a cult local following. Now the rest of the world is taking notice, resulting in a Rototom award for best Northern European Reggae band, and support slots with international stars such as Aswad, Nitin Sawhney and Julian Marley.

Formed initially as a studio project showcasing the talents of Jungle veterans DJ Bunjy and MC Joe Peng, Laid Blak have since grown into a heavyweight eight-piece outfit described as 'the ultimate festival act' by Brighton Noise. By turns catchy, hypnotic, furious and sweetly melodic, their music has a global appeal, fusing elements of rock, funk and bhangra to create a unique sound with a reggae heartbeat. It's infectiously danceable and optimistic, yet Laid Blak also have a more thoughtful side, and their lyrics detail the reality of city life with unflinching honesty.

2000-2045            Mad Apple Circus

Mad Apple Circus is an original blend of horn-fuelled styles, built on Ska/Hip-Hop/Jazz and Latin grooves – nothing but the good stuff. Owing to their unique sound and energetic performances, this hard-hitting, humble Bristolian nine-piece have fast become festival favourites and a popular choice among promoters in the UK and Europe.

Since bounding into the underground music scene and forging a presence of their own, MAC have been busy sharing stages with some of the industry’s finest. Notable greats include UB40, The Beat, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, The Skints, Suburban Legends and Hot 8 Brass Band.

The launch of their debut Self-Titled album in 2015 saw the band reach new heights. As well as making appearances on local radio shows, their music started receiving airtime across England and abroad and in turn primed the continent for their European tour.

Priding themselves as upbeat and what can only be described as an engaging display of jumping musical fusion, the thirst for the Apple’s juice never seems to quench. Already having ticked off slots at a whole host of festivals, last year alone they set crowds alight at Secret Garden Party, Sunrise, BoomTown Fair, Symmetry Festival and Glastonbury to mention but a few. With a honed ambition to continually enrich their music while remaining true to their core, Mad Apple Circus have unquestionably set about creating their own distinctive sound which is suitable staging itself as BRISTONE!! …Goes well with cloudy cider.

2100-2145            Swampgrass

Swampgrass play the mighty blues. It’s the dancing, drinking, up all night partying blues. Sure, there’s a slow song occasionally (no promises) but generally the shows start at pace and stay there.
Swampgrass formed in January 2013 and now find themselves regularly touring around the country with 2017 looking to be another shift in intensity with two full tours booked and a smaller mini tour just before festival season. While Swampgrass are most definitely a blues band, there are elements of many genres woven through the songs and the band appeals to a diverse audience.

“..pleasingly the band plough their own furrow without resorting to covering hoary old crowd pleasers”…”emotive vocals, like a British Janis Joplin” Dave Drury – Blues Matters (issue 91) “a delightful 40 minutes of irresistible speakeasy blues” Jonathon Kardasz – Uberrock “The ten tracks are a demonstration of the sound Swampgrass has twisted around their arrangements giving rise to a distinctive sound.”Liz Aiken – Bluesdoodles

1615-1655            Kevin and the Destroyers

Kevin and the Destroyers are a blues-rock band based in Somerset. The name (which was a joke that stuck) is becoming well renowned in the local Somerset area. After forming at the Blue School in Wells in 2014, they began writing songs together and gigging later that year. Performing for the first time at a pub acoustically in Wells, they were spotted by a local promoter and chosen to support John Otway a local sold-out gig. They then gigged mostly in the Bristol circuit, supporting a few well renowned bands on their UK tours before headlining their own show at the Louisiana in 2015. After this point, they then started gigging closer to home and have since been added to the bill on local festivals such as Farm Fest, RITS day and Wells May Fair. With more gigs being added all the time, these young guys are well worth a watch.

Their sound encapsulates the vintage sounds of the 60s and 70s rock bands of the era such as Led Zeppelin and Cream while modernizing it in their own way, making it blues that you could easily play on the radio. With harmony solos, blistering drum fills and booming bass lines, the sound is classic, unique, modern and exciting. The future of blues-rock is looking to be a bright one.

1505-1545            Gilda Parade

Stu C Morgan - Vocals & Guitar, Paul Michael James - Bass & Colin Gitanes - Drums. The band formed with no brief, other than to share and shape ideas, have fun, and see what came out. The recipe worked, and things clicked straight away. When it's heavy, it's heavy. When it's delicate, it's delicate, and when it's really cooking, it's something else.
Gilda Parade is all about the tunes and the execution - nothing else really matters as long as it feels and sounds good.

2315-0000            Lazy Daze

Glastonbury band performing their own unique genre of 'heavy folk'. If the word spreading across the music industry that live performance is going to be where it's at, is true, these multi-instrumentalists are right on track on with some catchy tunes and stunning four-part harmonies.
Original material with the occasional cover thrown in, having first been given the unique Lazy Daze touch. Their haunting version of Guns'n'Roses 'Sweet Child of Mine' is a show stopper.

2200-2245            Katey Brooks

Singer-songwriter Katey Brooks’ unique sound epitomizes the culturally diverse environment in which she grew up. Born and raised between Bristol, London and Arizona to musical parents, the Indie Award nominee is best described as a female Hozier, with all the haunting intensity and every bit of the soul.

With a “voice to melt glaciers” (Venue Magazine) Brooks is at home anywhere she can take her guitar. From the London 2012 Olympics to Glastonbury Festival, from WOMAD to Abbey Road, Brooks’ “devastating vocal talent” (Just Music That I Like) has garnered her admirers from across the spectrum of the industry, seeing her feature on tracks with Paloma Faith, Imelda May, The Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd and Brian May – not to mention sharing the bill with acts like Newton Faulkner, Ghostpoet, Deaf Havana and Mystery Jets.

Fast becoming a radio favourite, “not to be missed” (Time Out) Brooks’ music has been hailed on BBC Radio 1, 2 and 6, and she’s recently been added to the Starbucks playlist worldwide. The haunting, ethereal sound of her latest I Fought Lovers EP is prelude to the sonic largesse of future releases, as she heads to the studio to record her new album with a few of Britain’s finest.

Having led a fascinating life with a vivid cast of characters, Brooks takes to the road often, to draw inspiration from the people she meets. The writing for her current album began in the chaos of London life, continuing on tour in the dusty expanse of Australia at the beginning of 2015, and finding its completion on the side of a beautiful little mountain in the Welsh wilderness. Now under the wing of UK based label Abandon Music Group, Brooks has already packed in tours in France, Australia and Canada this year and is in the studio finishing her brand new album ‘We The People’.

What are Flipron? An English rock band from Glastonbury, UK. Their music was described by Music Connection (USA based music industry magazine) as “Barrelhouse Britpop” which the band thought was a pretty good description. Their songs are noted for their strong & wordy lyrical content.
Their main influences include The Kinks & Small Faces, Alex Harvey, Sparks, Madness, The Specials, Ziggy-era Bowie, The Damned, Ian Dury, Tom Waits, early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, old Hawaiian & blues records, Hank Williams, western swing, 20s 30s & 40s Americana & jazz, & mid-60s psychedelia, surf & garage.

3rd Glastonbury FM Songwriting Final

Saturday 14TH May at the Bocabar Glastonbury

Well it’s that time of year again when we bring you the Glastonbury Songwriting Final. We have some great prizes on offer for our 8 finalists. Slots at the Farmfestival and the GFM Stage at The Godney Gathering are up for grabs along with an acoustic gig with Pheonix Somerset and slots at The new Glastonbury Calling Festival. On top of this we also have a photo shoot with Laura Zaky Photography. So we must say a huge thanks to all of our sponsors.

In our first two finals we had great nights with two fantastic winners in UKID and Jack Fox-Williams. On top of this many entries won other great prizes and quite a few of those who didn’t bag prizes got asked by our panel of judges to their festivals the following year.
We have two new judges on our initial entries this year so a big thanks to them for doing such a great job of whittling down some fantastic entries to just 8 finalists. It is a really difficult job but one which they enjoyed but also found their selves torn as the standard was so high.
In the final all of the acts will play 3 songs, with their final song being the entry they are judged on. It is a great night to celebrate the diversity of music in the area and we have had big crowds on both of the finals so please don’t miss out.

The running times are
1st Act    1945-2015            My Social Orbit
2nd Act   2015-2045            Nathan Stiles
3rd Act   2045-2115            In Brackets
4th Act   2115-2145            Kevin and the Destroyers
5th Act   2145-2215            David 9 Lunas
6th Act   2215-2245            Harry and the Gondolas
7th Act   2245-2315            Van Buxton
8th Act   2345-2445            Safehaus

The 8 finalists are in no particular order

Harry and the Gondolas-Brisbane River

This Bristol-based trio benefits from Harry Gould’s lead vocals and guitar, Bubba Erikson’s buoyant bass lines and Sam Snell’s flawless harmonies and percussion. Meeting through mutual friends and coming together at parties and open mics, the band was eventually formed in late 2014 and following the release of their EP last year, have played iconic local venues such as Mr Wolfs, The Gallimaufry and The Louisiana. Having worked on their sound they decided a tour was in order, so naturally they went to the other side of the world for some good ol’ Auzzy inspiration – any excuse for a holiday!
With influences such as Mumford and Sons, Bears Den and Ben Howard, it is clear why Harry and the Gondolas are the perfect accompaniment to go with that cold cider you’re craving. Their chilled nu-folk, acoustic sound and Gould’s deep resonating vocals carry the crowd toe tapping and hand clapping through fast-paced Irish-folk to mellow ballads.

Nathan Stiles-Ode to the Night

Nathan is a young musician studying at Bridgwater College. We were impressed by his song but have very little information about him.

David 9 Lunas-All the Way Home
